WAZALENDO SACCO IMPLORES WOMEN TO TAKE LEAD  IN THE COOPERATIVE SECTOR

    Kiwatule Kampala 28th  May 2025

Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (WSACCO) in conjunction with the Uganda Cooperative Savings and Credit Union (UCSCU) have challenged women in cooperatives to take leadership responsibilities in the SACCO sector if they are to contribute positively to the Uganda’s transformation agenda. This message was communicated to women leaders from various SACCOs who are undergoing a week-long mentorship program at UCSCU. The training provides an opportunity for the women to share knowledge and learn from successful SACCOs such as Wazalendo SACCO.

Uganda’s chapter of the Women’s Mentorship Program is organised under the auspices of the Canadian Development Foundation (CDF) and is intended to equip and empower women leaders in the Cooperatives sector and make them contributors to the financial inclusion agenda.

While delivering a presentation to the ladies during their benchmark visit at WSACCO, the Chief Executive Officer of Wazalendo Brigadier General Joseph Freddy Onata commended the good job done by CDF and UCSCU to empower female leaders in SACCOs to be productive in their respective institutions.

Brig Gen Onata noted that WSACCO sponsors five ladies for the same training annually. ” We have had an opportunity to host the 12 SACCOs at WSACCO head office, where we have shared our experience and success factors that have pushed WSACCO to where it is today.  Such opportunities enable us to see how best we can use the capacity of women to grow cooperatives and ensure that they become progressive for the success and sustainability of SACCOs,” said Gen Onata.

He also implored SACCOs to embrace Technology, good governance practices, inclusivity, data management, continuous training among others if they are to excel.

During the benchmark event WSACCO leadership Identified one lady Ms Amgbua Gloria, acting credit manager at Moyo SACCO and the only lady who managed to attend 2025 women mentorship program from Northern Uganda, and she was given full sponsorship for African Development Educator program (ADE) under ACCOSCA.  ” As Wazalendo SACCO we do this, so that she goes back to the region and become a challenging agent in the region advocating for SACCO movement programs.

Ms Rita Namyalo appreciated Wazalendo on behalf of UCSCU Union for always opening doors for other SACCOs to come and learn and she pledged that they will continue working together to empower women in cooperatives.

Ms Mercy Tumukunde the CDF Women Mentorship program coordinator in Uganda appreciated Wazalendo for promoting the women agenda through training and supporting their programs whenever approached. She in particular thanked the pledge made for the 4th Cohot to fully sponsor one lady to travel and do an ADE program “The objective of women mentorship training is to equip women in cooperative with skills and build their confidence to become equal contributors in the cooperative workforce and entire community” Tumukunde explained.

While giving a vote of thanks on behalf of the trainees Ms Amgbua Gloria thanked Wazando SACCO for such great opportunity to learn, and she challenged fellow participants to continue uplifting one another to have great use of such an achievement.

The function was graced by the Directors and Heads of Departments at Wazando shared different expertise in the SACCO.
